Sandai Farm lies near Mweiga, not far from Nyeri, and is just about 3 hours by road from Nairobi. That makes it ideal for a weekend getaway or a long weekend in the highlands. Leave the city behind on Friday, and by the afternoon you are sitting on your veranda with a view of the countryside. For travellers from Europe, the farm is also a perfect first or last stop on a Kenya itinerary.

Sandai is run by Petra Allmendinger and her team – and whether you stay for a weekend or two weeks, you can count on the same warm welcome.

Self-catering – with everything the farm has to offer

Staying self-catering on Sandai does not mean staying on your own. The whole farm is yours to enjoy:

• Horseback riding through the open countryside
• Archery for beginners and the ambitious
• Yoga surrounded by nature
• Foot reflexology massages to fully unwind
• Billiards and table football for relaxed evenings
• Nature walks and bird watching

And on days when you don’t feel like cooking, the restaurant and café on the farm are right there for you.

Above all, Sandai offers one thing that is hard to find in the city: space. Plenty of it. Room to breathe, to take a slow walk, to watch the light change over the mountains – or simply to do nothing at all.

Kids and pets are welcome, parking is available and there is a gift shop in the main house. On request, we can arrange a pickup.

Day trips and safaris from Sandai

If you want to see more of Kenya, the cottages are an excellent base for exploring some of the country’s finest wildlife destinations:

• Solio Rhino Sanctuary – one of Africa’s oldest rhino sanctuaries, less than an hour away
• Aberdare National Park – dense forest, waterfalls and rare wildlife such as the bongo
• Ol Pejeta Conservancy – home to the last northern white rhinos
• Mount Kenya – Africa’s second highest peak, visible from the farm on clear days
